Long Run – 180 Mins

LOAD: 59

180 Mins @ Easy Pace (RPE: 3-6)

Time to make sure your fuelling and hydration is on point. 30-60g of carbs per hour. The longer the run goes on the tougher it will get.

15 Mile Trail Race. Sometimes it’s good to ignore the watch completely. Just tackle the trails. Obviously any gates, stiles, hills or scary cows (I hate ’em) will slow you down, so don’t worry about pace, just enjoy being out there and getting 15 miles banked. Good luck Sarah.

This was a very tough run, the route was a 5 mile lap and you could run it once, twice or 3 times depending on the distance you wanted to do. At the start of the run it was evident that I was right at the back and from about 1 mile in I was running alone, I think this effected me straight away and I just thought I can’t do more than one lap as I am so far behind everyone already. It was also quite hot and very hilly. However I have been wondering over the past couple of weeks, where I have had some poor longer runs, if it would be better to drop to the half marathon for Palma. We do have Paris marathon booked for April, and Palma was always just a get across the finish line and then look to improve on that for Paris. But I was thinking maybe it would be better to work on a strong half for Palma and then building on that for Paris. particularly as Palma has quite a strict cut off and I really don’t want a DNF.

Really sorry this didn’t go as hoped Sarah. I’ve been there myself at the back in races in the past and I understand it can be demoralising. If I’m totally honest with you, when you first signed up and said you were doing the marathon in October, I was a little concerned. Purely because your training volume at that time wasn’t very high. And going from where you were, to the mileage needed to run a good marathon was potentially a big step up, even across 6 months. So this suggestion of cutting back, in my opinion, would be a very sensible one. Especially if it takes away any stress or anxiety you have. Our running journey can be a long one, we don’t have to make huge progress in a short space of time. I’m on training plan 19 and still improving, so there should never be a hurry. If you’re smart and pick the right goals and progress gradually, you could be improving for the next 6-7 years. Which hopefully is an exciting prospect. Take a bit of time to think about it, discuss it with Andy, but I’d be supportive of that decision to drop down to the half and will update the plan accordingly if you choose that route. The most important thing is enjoyment, so factor that in too.
