The Amble

LOAD: 74

Up to 40km @ Easy Pace (RPE: 3)

Love this. Around 40km from Ditchling Beacon to Hampden Park on the South Downs Way. Well signposted. Depending on where you’re at with your training this is most likely to be a walk/run, especially up some of the hills. If you do struggle just hop on the bus for a leg.

On paper the distance is quite scary, but if you walked every hill (which is what I plan to do as they are pretty steep), and took time at the stop offs to refuel, I think you’ll be fine and the time on feet is great training for your Ultra. In fact probably the best training run you’ll do before now and race day, other than perhaps the Rye Ancient Trails. I’m really looking forward to this, should be a fun day out on the trails.

FEEDBACK

ENJOYMENT

😁 Good pace given the conditions/route

I’ve intentionally taken some time before writing my feedback as I feel like I needed some time to reflect!! I never thought I’d enjoy it as much as I did. I genuinely loved every minute and felt pretty good the whole day. I kept things super easy and didn’t allow myself to get swept up with Lindsey when she was first flying off. I dropped back and ended up catching back up anyway. I knew I’d never done anything like that distance so had no idea what I’d be feeling like come mile 20 but ended feeling like I wish I’d rounded it up to 27 miles😂 It’s given me such a huge boost for the ultra but also really made me reflect on my running. The Amble and the Elaine Williams have really reminded me what it’s all about and reignited a bit of a love for it. I’ve been so wrapped up in not quite being able to get to my PB paces that I forgot the bigger picture and just to enjoy it. Really hoping this has sparked my enthusiasm again and hopefully I can start enjoying it a bit more again!! It’s definitely going down as one of my top 3 of all time favourite races!

Love this!!! So pleased it went well for you. It is a fantastic run, completely different from chasing those times and getting caught up in splits etc. I think it’s good to have both to be honest. And putting in the hard work we do in training makes the pace we ran Sunday feel easy. But ultimately running is our hobby and we need to enjoy it, so doing events like this is important. As you say, a massive confidence boost for the Ultra and hopefully now you can see the 50k is well within your reach. In fact we don’t need to do a great deal more in terms of running long distances in the build up, having banked those miles on Sunday. Everything you’ve done over the last 6-12 months, all that gym work, all the persistence, it allows you to be able to do a run like this, so you should be really pleased with yourself that you’ve kept your fitness up, to allow you to take part. Fantastic work Alice.
