A Sussex Grand Prix race so should attract a strong field. Pretty much dead flat and the main issue will be the wind and how strong it’s blowing. But a good opportunity to run a fast time. As with any 10k, or race in fact, keep an eye on your early pace and don’t go off too fast.

😁 Good pace given the conditions/route

PACE

It was bloody windy! Haha. An out and back x 2 route, so we had 2 x 2.5km of head wind and 2 x 2.5km of tail wind. The 2nd head wind 2.5km was horrible. Can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually considered quitting at 5km, but shortly after I reevaluated the race; changed my stride slightly to accommodate for the wind, focusing on short and quick strides, and focussed on just getting under 40 mins, as I knew by then that the PB was not gonna happen. Really pleased with the pace on the final 2.5km, which resulted in a 10km time of 39:45. My 2nd sub 40 of the year and pretty confident that without the wind it would’ve been a PB.

Well done for digging deep mentally and smashing out such a good time. This all sounds so familiar to me. Seaford 10k earlier in the year. Wanted a PB. Weather was ideal when I entered, got progressively worse as the week went on and must have been a 15-20mph head wind on the way back. Never even hit goal pace with the wind behind in truth, felt awful and wanted to give up so badly. But stuck with it. Then a few weeks later, the 5 Miler, still windy but on the way out and had company. Felt so much stronger and had a blinder. Point being, if we dig deep in those races that are tough, then when the next one rolls around where everything falls into place, it just feels so much easier. And it’s what really matters with running. How we react when our brain first says quit. It might be a 10k like this, midway through and ultra, or even if a training session. If we see that moments as “opportunities” to improve our fitness rather than having to stop, then we’ll become the best possible version of ourselves. And I think you’ve pretty much nailed that recently and why you are getting that success. So when that horrible moment comes along, and it will, many more times, see it as your opportunity to push on and become even stronger. Sorry if I’ve waffled a lot but I love that mindset and I think you should be really pleased with yourself for digging deep in those tough conditions and achieving another fantastic time, well done Joe.
