3 Miles @ Half Marathon Pace (RPE: 8)

1 Mile CD @ Easy Pace (RPE: 3)

A big half marathon session. Important to find that goal pace in training and this session replicates the race well with the RPE increasing with each interval.

Last opportunity to really influence what that clock says when you cross the finish line at the Big Half and that should be the motivation here. This is a session, so although it’s at half marathon pace, if you get it right those last 3 miles will feel like a 5k effort. It’s good to embrace that rather than question “it shouldn’t feel this hard?” …..it should 😂

I had to get the in on Saturday as we’re off swimming Sunday morning training for the serpentine. I was having a few female issues which meant I had to stop a couple of times. I had really underestimated how packed it would be on the seafront too so difficult to hit the paces on some miles. I didn’t quite reach my target in the second and third set and if I’m honest a chunk of the first set was downhill so that’s what made me get it. I am a little anxious about the big half as I’ve not really done any speed work in this training block so these sessions feel really hard. The pace feels fast. I feel my issues with my back and glute a lot more during and after these too. I didn’t have a problem with it for the ultra but felt it today.

Really well done Alice for getting out there and smashing this session. Given where you’re at with your training and the limitations you’ve had I think you’d be better off approaching the Big Half without any real goals or aspirations. As you say, speed work has been limited. So going there and enjoying it should be the only priority. I think with that in mind it should hopefully remove some of the anxiety around the event and relax you a bit. I’m sure there will be half marathons in the future where you’ll be much better prepared and more focused on a time, so right now it’s the occasion to be putting those expectations on yourself. What this session still achieves though is you can go there and run a strong race, but without focusing on times or pace.
