Bewl 15

LOAD: 70

15 Miles @ Goal Pace (RPE: 4-8)

A tough race with some tricky hills at the end. The main decision here is whether it’s going to be an easy long run or a hard race?

I’ve got this listed as a steady run. I think you mentioned you were just going to enjoy it rather than race it. Which I feel at this stage of the plan is a good approach. It seems a shame to push too hard on a race like this and not have the opportunity to enjoy the views.

PACE

We were lucky with the weather. It poured down at 7AM and again in the afternoon. If anything it was a bit too hot and clammy. I ran with Neil, who was uncomfortable with a foot injury, and with Laura who was tired, so I knew I was going to have an easy run. My legs and hips were stiff for at least the first half. It was a little bit too slow and sleepy and I walked a few more hills than I should have, but I had lots of energy to power up the last hill to the finish. Good to have a longish easy run. Some of the ruts and ridges in the trail were uncomfortable to run on but I figured they were probably good for ankle muscles and for balance. Felt a bit guilty that the winner finished 70 minutes ahead of me.

Well done Conal, I think sometimes it’s good to run a race in this manner and treat it as an easy run. If you push too hard, too often, you’ll end up picking up injuries. Nice to have that company and hope Neil is ok now? I know he’s been very unlucky with injuries of late. It’s the uneven nature of the trails that frustrates me at Bewl and partly the reason I didn’t fancy doing it this year. Most important thing is you enjoyed it though.
