Hastings 5 Miler

LOAD: 380

10 Mins WU @ Easy Pace (RPE: 2)

5 Miles @ 5 Mile Pace (RPE: 5-9)

10 Mins CD @ Easy Pace (RPE: 3)

5 miles is a really tough distance to get right. Rest assured, this is tough. The first mile is so important, don’t go off too quick and you’ll set yourself up for a strong race.

I’m not going to set you a target here because I know you said there’s been some anxiousness about racing. In fact the only challenge is to start off conservatively. Let some of the others go ahead and definitely make sure the pace starts with a 9:??. Then settle into miles 2 & 3, then if you can, finish strongly and then pick off a few runners. Those last few miles should feel similar to the efforts we do, but if you pace it right early on, it should be an enjoyable race. The most important thing is being part of the community, before, during and after the race. Also focus on what you can control. Warm up, positive thinking, pacing. If you do that you’ll have a strong and fun race. Good luck Sue. You got this!

I’m actually chuffed with this! Ran completely on feel; had no idea what pace I was running. Ran with Sue A for the first 3 miles so I knew I must be around the 9 min mile range, and then I went slightly ahead. Made a nice change not to be running into the wind on the return leg, so I felt strong and in control. Ended up with 45:47 according to my phone. Will be interesting to see what my chip time was. Edit: chip time 45:36 😃

That’s a fantastic time. It was just a few weeks ago you mentioned the motivation wasn’t there to do these races. And here we are now and you’re running really strong and enjoying them. Sounds like you executed a really smart race in the tricky conditions. So definitely one to bank and build your confidence from. Excellent running Sue.
