London Marathon

LOAD: 105

26.2 Miles @ Marathon Pace (RPE: 4-7)

It doesn’t get any bigger than this. What an opportunity. Just be sure to have a clear pacing and fuelling strategy. Stick to it and don’t go off too fast. 90% of marathon runners do just that.

I think it’s important to realise this training plan has already been a huge success. You’ve smashed it!!! All those long runs, intervals and strength work. So whatever does happen here, it doesn’t determine whether your plan has been a success of failure. You’ve already succeeded. This is the celebration party, and what a party it is. No targets here, the only advice I can give is just ensure you set off at an easy pace. The temptation to go too fast at the start when everything feels good only ends in a tough finish. So cruise for 3 hours and then dig deep when it gets tough. One foot in front of the other. Soak up the atmosphere and keep imagining how good it’s going to feel when you cross that finish line. It’s been a pleasure working with you on this plan, any questions, any doubts, please message me at anytime. You got this Kayla!!

PACE

Well what a final run of the plan, had a pacing and fueling strategy in place, but after sitting in my wave for one hour twenty minutes with no shade, I could feel my skin and head cooking I did have plenty of high factor sun cream and hat on, so adjusted my pace at the start to a bit slower than planned to give myself time to adjust and hoping I didn’t burn out too quickly, the first half was very hot so my pace didn’t really improve, and congestion made getting into a good rhythm hard, the walkers were a pain from the start, people just stopping in front of you with no warning, or a line of walkers taking up the road road, don’t suppose the earlier waves have that issue, but I found a pace that felt good and that I could just keep plodding along at, kept to my fueling plan, took on plenty of fluids, had a few bloated stomach issues, which I tend to get on the over 3 hour runs when I get a bit warm, with those things considered I felt pretty good for most of the run, didn’t struggle until last 4 miles which I was pleased about considering what I can be like in the heat, it was great to see you all at the end, helped so much, I didn’t think at any point that I can not do it, I loved the showers to run through, did all of those and fire brigade hosing us down, Then there were the supporters, the music, the bands, the signs, sensory over load, just so much to take in, and made the miles pass quickly, running over tower bridge, up to Big Ben and for me the end coming up to the finish line, you turn the corner and there is Buckingham palace it was amazing, although the last few miles I had had enough, but the whole thing didn’t feel like 26.2 miles, lydd 20 miles seemed longer. Definitely a day I will never forget, I don’t think there was any part of the course with no support, incredible day. So for me although my time was longer than I wanted, I ran 26.2 miles in that heat and enjoyed myself, didn’t feel like death at the end, my daughter said at the finish line she was surprise how smiley and energetic I was. I never expected to do a marathon, I entered after persuasion from a work colleague a few years ago then just re-entered by email not really sure why, but if I hadn’t already been training with you I probably would not have gone ahead with it, or if I had I would have really panic about it, being on the plan kept me calm about it, especially as we got near I got a little nervous/ excited but I didn’t have any anxiety about it, which surprised me, the past year being on team orange has been amazing and has given me so much and new friends, I have learnt so much and really enjoyed it. How many people say that, that they enjoyed marathon training, so thank you so much Simon for all your time, advice, support and guidance and great training plans, it really is all appreciated team šŸŠ rocks, see you in a few weeks after recovery

Ah, this is brilliant. Makes me emotional reading this 😄 What pleases me the most is that you felt like you were so well prepared and despite the heat, never blew up or felt like it was beyond you. That shows how well you did in training and what a smart race you ran. To be waiting around for so long, in what was the hottest part of the day must have been so hard. To have that awareness to slow down is really smart and shows what a good race you ran. I can imagine it must have been incredibly frustrating with so many people stopping, walking and blocking the path and does make you question how many of them are actually fit enough to run the marathon (hey ho). To take on this challenge in the first place is incredible but to embrace the training as you have done, it’s been a pleasure to work with you. I can’t remember a single time you moaned or had a negative attitude towards your training. I’m super proud of what you’ve achieved and I don’t think you can worry about the time given those conditions. Pretty much every runner I follow, from elite to the 6 hour runners, missed their target time but some distance and the longer you are out there, the harder it gets, especially for you later starters. I’m also so pleased that you’ve gained so much from being part of the Team, that’s exactly what I strive for in setting up this concept, so those words mean the World to me. If it’s ok would you mind me sharing the last paragraph on my socials? Feel free to say no if it’s personal to you, I would understand. To conclude, Kayla, you are amazing, thank you for giving me this opportunity to help you achieve this incredible goal 🧔
