Rye Ancient Trails 30K

LOAD: 85

5 Mins WU @ Easy Pace (RPE: 2)

30K @ Target Pace (RPE: 4-8)

Such a fantastic event on some beautiful trails. Your pace will be determined by your goals and whether you are racing or treating it as an easy run. Training pts will also vary depending on your pace goals. Good luck.

As always this was a great event. I am very happy with how it went, but a number of things meant it didn’t quite go perfectly. About 20K in, my left calf started feeling a little tight, but not crampy, and then soon after the legs just wouldn’t/couldn’t push on! The engine was there, as heart rate was even quite a bit lower that last 10K. Cadence didn’t even drop either. Just the extra speed wouldn’t happen! There were quite a few factors at play – work has been super busy, so had very little time to prep this week as I’d have liked – this also fed into poor fuelling leading into the weekend as was getting home late – I still haven’t managed to restock my electrolyte gels, so only had energy top up but not salts – and finally, not realising the group I had settled in with departed left at the turn point and were obviously going along at their 15K pace 🤦 As I say though, despite not being perfect, I am still very happy with the result as it is. I need to remember that this run in 2023 was my first real run (and a lot of walking) and it took me 4.5 hours!

I’m glad you’ve sat down and analysed what might have gone wrong as that can help for future events. But with everything you had going on in recent weeks, it’s inevitable preparation would have been less than ideal. As you say, in those 2 years you’ve made huge gains and it’s important to remember this a challenging route. 19+ miles, hilly, tricky underfoot and all the stiles as well to climb over. I was running at an easier pace, especially to start with, and the legs were my issue towards the end too. Whilst my RPE felt under control, the legs started to feel heavy and I don’t think I would have wanted to run any further. Plus this was just part of the training, to get us stronger and I think that will have served it’s purpose. So best not to worry about the last 10k and move forward knowing your running great and probably stronger as a result of this challenge. Well done Jamie.
