SUMMARY πŸ“

5 miles is a really tough distance to get right. Rest assured, this is tough. The first mile is so important, don’t go off too quick and you’ll set yourself up for a strong race.

COACH SIMON NOTES 🍊

A great race put on by the best club in England. Not that I am biased. It’s a great start/finish, right in the centre of Hastings, in front of the town hall. There are normally big crowds to gather to cheer you in. One of my favourite finishes to any race.

Always get a good warm up in for an event like this, so arrive with at least an hour to spare. Make sure you know the pace you want to average and take into account any wind.

This is a very flat route but also very exposed on Hastings seafront, so if the wind is a factor, take that into account when setting your target paces.

That first mile can make or break your race. Enjoy it. It’s the one mile that will feel relatively comfortable and if you don’t go off too fast your RPE should be around the 5-6/10.

Once you settle into that pace, try and keep it consistent, wind permitting and use the other runners around you to keep that perceived effort lower.

Miles 3 & 4 are always the toughest. You’re going to feel a long way from the finish and working at a high effort. So focus on running tall and relaxed. Keep that cadence nice and high, running efficiently. If you can latch on to another runner, use them as your pacer and potentially block out any wind.

Then when you reach that last mile, it’s pretty all in. Full Send. Empty the tank. Give it everything you’ve got. There’s always a little bit left at the end. So as you come up the slope and out the underpass, put in a sprint finish and leave the crowd cheering you in.

Very best of luck. You got this.
