A 3 run week thanks to the Pier to Pier. Tuesday, just be a little controlled with the pace as 24 mins at quicker than 5k pace would be too much. So for the 2 min reps, just keep it steady, a little ahead of 5k pace. As for Sunday, if you want to discuss pacing, let me know. No reason why you shouldn’t be competitive in the MV50 category. I guess if Stu runs he’ll be tough to beat, but you are not far behind. So maybe roll the dice and have a pop at that?

A great 5k session to improve speed. Don’t got off too quick, so focus on your pace in those first few reps, then you’ll get an idea of how far you can run each rep. We want to be ahead of our current 5k pace though. From there you can then pick up the pace and cadence for the 1 minute reps.

Great session. Shame about the homeless drug addicts in the shelter. Started at 20 minute parkrun pace but by the end of the 8 x 2’ my average was 6’13”/mile without pushing hard at all. The 45” recovery was plenty but on the 8 x1’ I pushed a little harder and was still gasping a little and heart pumping when we started again. I know this was intentional. Was averaging around 5’40’/mile for this bit. Was delighted with my pace and energy, then I got home and saw that Louis had been doing 2K repeats at HMP and that means 5’15’/mile…. Obviously I’m not comparing myself with him. Just very impressed. 46% zone 4 and 35% zone 5. Good for me to get into zone 5 more than usual
Just glad they didn’t give us any hassle. Really impressed with your execution there and something I’m learning is about manipulating pace and recoveries between reps to change the sessions slightly. I’ve noticed a bit difference doing that with my own running in recent weeks and why I wanted to implement that for the group. So impressed with how well you did. Louis is incredible. What a runner. What a story. Just hope he doesn’t overdo it. He did 5 hard effort sessions (5k pace or quicker) in a 10 day spell recently which is bonkers. But he has a coach so I have to leave them to it. Right now it’s clearly working and hopefully he can avoid any injury issues. But I would pretending if I wasn’t worried.

Likely your heart rate will climb as you run up the hills, so don’t worry too much about drifting into Zone 3 for the hills, try and keep the rest in Zone 2.

The Pier to Pier. What a race. Unless you are really pushing for a quick time, in which case, go hard early (need to be well trained for this strategy), my advice is slowly build the pace and work your way through the Zones. But you certainly don’t want to be quicker than half marathon pace until late in the race.
