How Many Marathon PBs did you say?

What a weekend! On Saturday I logged off early, even earlier than planned in truth as Joe was 20 minutes ahead of schedule through the first two check points of the SDW50.

For those of you that don’t know, the SDW50 stands for South Downs Way 50 Miler. Almost two marathons, albeit with 2,120 metres of elevation. For perspective the East Hill in Hastings is 100 metres. Try running up that 21 times. Didn’t think so.

We headed for Firle, one of the highest points on the SDW50, also one of the most exposed, but with incredible views. The wind tried it’s best to dampen the mood, stealing my parking ticket and making me scamper after it, much to the amusement of those taking shelter in their cars, one of whom was Jax.

It was inspiring to watch the runners come through. Some enjoying themselves more than others, “well this is the worst experience of my life” said one, before disappearing off into the distance.

It was around 2:30 that I spotted Joe through our binoculars, it was a lovely moment when we greeted as I’d kept it a surprise until this point, and you could see the gratitude in his expression, hopefully lifting him for the final 12 miles that were ahead.

We were able to see Joe twice more, passing through the picturesque village of Alfriston and again at the finish line, where his parents and niece eagerly awaited his arrival. Joe completed the course in 8:04:16, nearly an hour under his target.

On Sunday we again headed west, this time using public transport, to get to Brighton for the marathon. Having entered prior to my injury, and with no option to defer, I decided I would at least try and get some value for my money.

I rocked up at the start area just in time to catch the last wave. This was the intention so we could catch the train, but it did prove quite manic, at least I didn’t have to queue for the loo.

The first 10k in and around the city were amazing, the support was incredible. It was really nice for me to be able to see all my runners out on the course.

Sarah J was the first to pass, she was with a group of Hastings Runners who must have started in my wave. They were just behind me in the early stages and Sarah maintained a strong consistent pace throughout, completing her first marathon in 5:31:23.

On the seafront it was my runners that spotted me rather than the other way round. I guess I’m not hard to recognise, right?

Chris came past looking strong, and he completed his first official road marathon in a time of 3:54:44, not quite his A-goal, but a strong performance all the same.

Another mile down the road, I had my eyes peeled to try and make sure I didn’t miss Lucy P run by. I needn’t have worried, there she was, frantically waving her hands and shouting at the top of her voice, to grab my attention 😂

That positivity clearly helped as she ran a superb race, consistent splits throughout, to finish her first marathon in a brilliant time of 3:56:30.

It was shortly after I had passed the loud waving crazy lady, that I got a ping on my phone from Lou H. A sub 2 half marathon has been her goal for a while, and perhaps almost a nemesis after several failed attempts. But if you know Lou, you’re be aware she doesn’t quit. So to receive that message en route, reading “1:59:29!!!! I did it coach 🥳🥳” really lifted my spirits.

As planned, I stopped at the Pier around the 14.5 mile mark so I didn’t flair up my injury, to ensure I can continue to get back into full training over the next couple of months.

From that point onwards it was chaotic, people everywhere, loud people too – DJ’s, drag queens, drummers, just loud noise. A complete contrast to the quiet trails of the SDW50, 24 hours previously.

3 of the team got to experience those trails as Victoria, Emily and Rebecca had all entered the Maverick Brighton Trail Marathon.  Taking place on the same day and finishing at the same location as the Brighton Marathon. I had hoped I would see them, but it was just too busy. All 3 ran brilliant races, Victoria 4:33:48, Emily 4:50:55 and Rebecca 5:55:20. New PBs for all 3.

As well as Brighton, Sarah T (6:04) and Andy (5:34) completed the Paris Marathon, both citing it as their favourite race so far.

Sue M ran the London Landmarks Half, bravely battling a painful side, from a recent fall, clocking 2:24, to finish in the top 25% of her age category. There was a parkrun PB for Jamie T on Saturday as well, despite a strong headwind, his 20:01 was his quickest Saturday morning 5k to date.

Another fantastic weekend for the Team. So many great achievements and richly deserved for the hard work put into training over the winter months.
