I really didn’t know if I was going to be able to achieve this or not. My training wasn’t as good as previous PB attempts due to the hip niggle and having to reduce the volume of miles I was able to run. What I was prepared for was that there were stages in this race where it was going to get tough. So the question was going to be, how much do I want this? I really focused on one kilometer at a time. At every stage of this race I knew where I was in relation to my goal. At one stage I was 23 seconds ahead of schedule but as the race progressed and it got tougher this dropped to 8 seconds. That was the point we had to turn into the wind and many other competitors were struggling. But I kept going, I wanted to set an example for the runners I coach and I also found something extra in the last km. My final km was 15 seconds quicker than any other kilometer in the race. When I got home I put on some of my favourite tunes and celebrated my achievement. Buzzing!

Awesome! Having that race strategy and understanding how to pace a race correctly is so important in terms of maximising your potential and also from an enjoyment perspective. Hopefully now the hip will allow the volume and intensity of future training plans to increase and help times improve.
