Oh I hated that. I started off feeling good. And then I hit the halfway point and I was like no. I don’t want to do this anymore, then I saw Nigel up front and he was overtaking everyone and I thought I can do that, so I pushed on. I lost it a bit at azzur started to feel like I was going to throw up. Was actually retching but I still plugged on. I had passed Jax along past the pier and I knew she was coming up to me as I could hear the marshalls saying well done Jax which was getting closer and closer after every marshall. So I found that last little burst of energy you’re always mentioning (can’t remember what it’s called!) and just managed to keep my space. It was frigging close! I got the time as 25.54 which is a PB for me of 36 seconds! I did it in 26.30 last year. First time I’ve actually beat your target which I’m really really pleased about.

Great feedback thank you. Congrats on the PB, and by 36 seconds that’s massive. That feeling at halfway of wanting to stop is normal. In fact, I’ve probably said this before to you, our brain has a safety mechanism that whenever it’s working hard, it tells our body to slow down or stop. So that’s not actually a conscious thought by you to quit. It’s what everyone’s brain is saying. It will happen anytime you push your limits. You can simply override it, ignore it and push on. Yes it’s hard, but if you focus on running tall and relaxed it can definitely help. I try and get my emotions stirring, willing myself to keep going, to dig deep, and when you do it feels amazing to overcome our stupid safety conscious brain. One of my favourite quotes comes from a leading ultra runner. He says “When you think you’re fucked, you’re actually only 45% fucked”.
