Pier to Pier

LOAD: 800

5 Mins WU @ Easy Pace (RPE: 2)

16 Miles @ Target Pace (RPE: 4-8)

Biggest mistake here is going off too fast. I’ve done this before where runners I know I can beat have torn off at 10k pace only to blow up. Hopefully my target for you is right and definitely don’t start off quicker. If you feel good once you come over the hills near Glyne Gap, then pick up the pace. You got this. Fuelling is also essential for a race of this distance.

The nearest person to you on the team in terms of predicted paces is me. My strategy is to try and run consistent splits throughout of around 4:45-4:50. I do have more experience of longer distance runs, but if I was in your shoes I would simply try and stick with the coach for as long as possible and just see what happens. We both know you could hold this pace comfortable for 10 miles. If I wasn’t running and didn’t think that was a good approach I would be inclined to suggest aiming for 5 min kms and then perhaps looking to pick up the pace once you hit Hastings Seafront.

ENJOYMENT

PACE

Honestly, I enjoyed every moment of that. Running with you and the others allowed me to focus just on the running and i ignored the pace entirely knowing that you had an eye on it ( a good thing as i forgot to start my watch and it was playing up for a whilst). I felt stronger as the race went on and decided to push on, maintaining a 4.50 pace, when you stopped for water. Four things i was particularly pleased about the race were : fueling, not stopping, my body felt like i could have gone for another (5k) and the pacing. Ebi i didn’t fall over and i didnt sprint (well speed up) at bottle alley thinking it was over at hastings pier. Today my body feels good and i am looking forward to the intervals tomorrow.

Your run yesterday made me so happy as I know it was off the back of a tough run last weekend. I’m not sure you could have run a better race in truth. It was great to have your company for the first part of the run and you did the right thing to kick on and maintain that pace. The fact you felt strong at the end is a really positive sign for all the events coming up. I’m so pleased with the progress you have made and I think this does highlight how much fun a race like this can be when you get that pacing right. Fantastic running Matt.
