Considering my shoulder was a real issue at work today it was fine for this. Must be different muscles or the repetitive nature of my job at times. Don’t stress about not going to the briefing, I just overthink everything and haven’t worked out how to shut the brain of yet. Enjoy them bluebells, it’s wonderful out. Hopefully the situation with everyone improved soon and we can go back to all smiling and supporting each other.

36pts | 120 Mins Run

What a day!!!!!! The trail started very steep and technical (rock and dusty sand) straightaway and on the first downhill part, you will not believe it, but I twisted my usual left ankle very badly ON Km 3 OF 42!!!!!!!!!! (Incidentally, it was 49 km at the end, but at the time I didn’t know..) I wanted to die inside, I though “that’s it, I have to go back” but luckily a few weeks ago I decided to buy some compression socks and a sort of elastic brace just for this eventuality, and that literally saved the two days and at least a month’s training ahead.. the braces limited the twisting, held the swallowing and supportted the ankle. And I used the poles almost like crutches, supporting me even on the flat. With lots of pain in the beginning and gradually a little bit less and less I managed to finish 22km and 1200km ascend (and descent). I had another moment of great pain when I reached the top of the last ascent, but even in that case I managed to do the last (very technical again and a nightmare with a twisted ankle!) descent. I wouldn’t have made it without ankle support and poles! Focaccia and a cryotherapy session in the sea at the end was a huge reward! After removing the compression sock the ankle was swallen but not massively. Ibuprofen gel + ice helped. It was really a mental challenge because we were waiting at each others at certain points, but i did quite long bits alone, completely in my own thoughts trying not to give up. I don’t know how many points you would like to give for this, but it was def more than 2hr run /20k in the park!

36pts | 120 Mins Run

  • ✅ Completed
I was much fresher dan day 1, set the pace for everybody for a few km at some points in the middle of the trail, went relatively ‘fast’ considering everything, uphill (I even scored a 4th place at all time on a strava segment!). By day two I gained much more experience especially in fuelling!!! Day 1 I had only gels and a cereal bar – I wasn’t angry at all, so didnt eat much. On day two the girls told me ‘eat even if you are not angry’ and I ate much more (never ate so much in my life, but I had never burnt 3700 cal in a day before either) and the whole run felt completely different. On strava I registered 26km on the second day, but I lost 1 km, forgetting to start the garmin in a couple of occasions, so in total we did 49km and 2600mt ascent (and descent)! Considering it was my first time, a little bit more than a month ago I had that ankle injury, then the back, then a twisted ankle at km3, than I was the oldest among people 12-17 younger than me, with ultras, iron mans and so on on their cv, I would say that I defended myself very well!! Sorry for the long account, but I had long conversations with you in my mind while I was alone on the trail, ahah, I think I saw some saints and the holy mary at some point as well in the heat! Thank you so much for realistically believing in me and helping me achieve such an incredible thing!! Thank you!!!! Ps My brother was so happy about the surprise, it couldnt have gone better!!!

Short Terms Goals

Simon, suggest you read the long term goals first then come back to short term as I think we can adjust the short term goals to suit the long term goals…

So focus is long runs, (I’d like to do the amble, P2P, Bewl – away for R-H) but realise that I’m not good in the hot hot weather… so happy to include those as targets but see what’s it’s like (especially for P2P as there is hardly any shade).

I would be interested to see what I could do on a flat HM course… maybe Tonbridge in October (but it maybe too soon for BH?) and then again Paddock Wood in Feb/ March to test improvement (as prep for the marathon?)

Then put fun stuff in around it????

What do you think??

Long Terms Goals

Long term goals are easier…

1. I would like do do Beachy Head Marathon (October 2026) … for two reasons, one it feels like it’s a right of passage for runners around Hastings. I’ve compared it to BTM and it’s hillier and tougher and if I am going to it it would be good to have company – I know Sue Mann and Steph are doing it… Steph is quicker than me but Sue isn’t so I feel I could keep up with them and have company… We’ve also got the usual South Wales holiday booked the first week in November, so I would look to take 2/3 weeks off after BH before the next block…

2. Then I would like to do a road marathon to see what time I’m capable of … I think I will enter Brighton (to secure a place and it’s local – notice I didn’t say easy to get to and back!) but also try to enter Paris (how amazing would it be to run around those amazing landmarks!!) and the ballot for London (I can hope) and then run just one of those. Timings are about the same so should fit into a plan.

That’s likely to have scratched my marathon itch so….

Cross Training

Cycling

If I’m doing BH, I will need more quad focused exercises (my quads were shredded after the last hill) and as BH is hillier that’s a big area I need to focus on – so exercises for going both up and down hills. Cycling – happy to have as an option… I have a bike but haven’t been out on it in a while so would need to build up gradually… also a bit of a fair weather cyclist…. Running 3 per weeks fine. With 1/2 S&C. No preference on hours per week as it’ll generally be driven by the plan…

Short Terms Goals

Id like to slowly build my speed back up, particularly over 10k, 10miles and 1/2 marathon distance. But also want to feel more comfortable running, so that I can hold a pace steadily.

Long Terms Goals

I think id like to do a marathon again. But not until ive got faster. I.e. comfortably under 5hrs.
Also want to get more into shape and feel ‘lighter’ on my feet.
Also steadily improving 10k, 10mile 1/2 times, as above.
By end of the year, sub 55min 10k, and close to a 2hr, 1/2 would be good
