Heathfield 10k done! 😀 I started with my usual walking warm up to ease the legs, then drills. I found a lovely cool spot in nearby Darch’s Wood – shady trees, twittery birds, ponds, with paths where I cd do my drills unobserved then walk/jog back to the race HQ. After that I did a running warm up including 8x100m strides. Pain had worn off with these warm ups, some stretches and a dose of Paracetamol. Nice start, running downhill. One of my current heroes, Mark D, soon overtook me at speed. I treated the event as a tempo run and feel I achieved that. I power walked on some hills but ran all of the final hill from 8k. Another hero – Sue M, came past at 7km, really going well, and I could see her getting further ahead up the hill. I upped my speed for the final section on grass and felt pleased with my effort today, regardless of my times getting worse. I won my age group but my main competition was not running! Nice to see you and Jax cheering us on near the top of the hill.
There are two ways you can look at these races right now. One is to compare past times and be a little disappointed. The other is to love being part of the club, the team, finishing strongly and just having a fun time. So I know you definitely are embracing the latter but I also wanted to address the other side, as I’m sure there is a little tinge there which would prefer to be faster. But honesty don’t worry about that. Enjoy feeling strong, there were very few around your time who would have made it all the way up that hill. Sue and Mark, perhaps, but as you say, they are both awesome. A great way to finish a wonderful week.
