Week Commencing: 29 June 26

Choose Day๐Ÿ‘‡

I know we’ve had a few disrupted weeks but sometimes it’s not about the progress we make but almost damage limitation. Now we have an opportunity to bank a really good week, maybe even the best so far. One switch we could make if you wanted another rest day is move your S&C to Thursday alongside the swim, but only if the legs feel ok after 2 days of running in a row. Let’s make this a good week Jan.

Maintaining your current 5k pace will get progressively more challenging as a session unfolds. So breaking it down in this nature should allow you to maintain that pace for the whole session.

Thoroughly enjoyable Efforts session. It was a last minute decision due to another family disaster. Dom (grandchildren’s dad, who attempted suicide), was 8ft up a dodgy ladder which collapsed and he broke his hip. During the whole time I’ve been away, he’s been in Brighton hospital and just got out yesterday so I had no choice but to sort a few things out for him on my return today which meant missing your efforts. Anyway – legs felt great, breathing felt good and in general I felt fresh and comfortable. Achilles still a problem but manageable. Can’t make head nor tail of my stats because it includes my warm up, cool down and rests in between (or is it just me)? I’m unsure about Bewl because of Achilles and wondering if I’ll be up to the distance with all the breaks from running I’ve been having. What are your thoughts?
Crikey, that does sound stressful. But glad you were still able to run. In terms of stats, I tend to separate the WU/CD from a main efforts session, just to divide the stats. The last stat RPE, is just effort level out of 10. I’ve not got any HR stats for you which I could add, if you know your max heart rate, your watch should tell you. Bewl? What have you got the gain really from doing it? Compared to the risks. I think with the firm bumpy ground and hills, it’s a route which has the potential to put quite a bit of demand on the achilles, compared to say the Pier to Pier which is a dead flat road race, where every step will be consistent, and less demanding on the calves and achilles, I think it might be a case of just sitting this one out. You could do the 5 mile? Perhaps we just need to get over this next month or so and hope things settle down a little.

Zone 2: Easy

If you have accurate heart rate data that is far and away the best guide for this run. Stay in Zone 2 if you can.

Slightly tired legs tonight and Achilles/heel not brilliant. I’m wondering if it’s the lack of consistent running and S&C’s, alongside the hot weather and being a bit dehydrated? It didn’t help walking the fields of the festival at the weekend and spending hours a day on my feet watching the band’s which caused a lot of soreness and stiffness (almost had me walking flat footed when I got up each morning โ˜น๏ธ Stats haven’t downloaded from watch to my app so not showing on Strava either. Ran to and from around 5 miles in total. What should I do on Sunday instead of Beel 15 (I don’t fancy the 5 miler as an alternative).
Well done Jan. It could easily be the stuff you’ve done outside of running that has caused the discomfort in the achilles. Sunday I would say anything from 60-90 mins would be good. Perhaps a rare run out with the Larch Close gang to keep it easy? Or just a solo mooch along the front at your own pace.

Enjoy. Swimming is a great alternative to running and probably the best form of cross training.

Earlier then usual swim this morning as other things going on in – it was a bit like the M25 I’ve been experiencing recently which on a positive note, meant I had to slow down to avoid swimming into the back of someone. Quite enjoyable โ˜บ๏ธ
That would always be my fear of swimming. I’ve read books about triathlons where in the swim there are times they are on top of each other in the water. Sounds horrible. Well done Jan

This should be a good all round workout which will hopefully help with you keep those niggles at bay. The idea being we can slowly add to these. Those doing the best with their strength are the ones who keep it simple and consistent, week in week out.

If time is ever an issue. You can do some supersets. What is a superset? It means combined 2 exercises together, ideally ones that are different.

For example you might do 1 set of Bent Knee Calf Raises, and rather than just twiddle your thumbs for 60 seconds before doing the next set, you do a wall sit inbetween.

I forgot my S&C’s I’m so out of the routine!! However I played an hour’s football and will try to get my S&C’s in on Sunday afternoon if possible.
No worries, hopefully things will settle down a bit soon.

This is likely to be Bewl 15 as it’s the only 15 mile race I know of. Marathon pace is a good target here as the trails and likely warm conditions will slow you down a fraction, not to mention the hills late on.

Great run this morning – I was really looking forward to it and it didn’t disappoint. Felt good and comfortable. HR spiked at 181 but average 146. It makes no difference whether I’m doing efforts, a race or an easy paced run so not sure my HR is the best way of measuring for me. Chatting with another woman today whose is exactly the same so not worried about it. How I’m running when I feeling is a better measurement of the effort I’m putting in. Niggles more manageable now. I .ust have given you bum information about next week. I’m here until Thursday so can fit in pilates on Monday, not sure a out Tuesday as I’m working all day and will probably be taking my granddaughter to football (if I’m not ill join you at Efforts). I can run Wednesday with the club and hoping to fit a run in when in Leeds. May be back in time for long run on Sunday if not travelling back.
So pleased this went well. RPE is a good way to train as well. So long as you are comfortable with your own effort level. From a coaching point of view it’s just not as easy to hold people back as I’ve had runners who say they are working at a 3/10, but when you look at their pace, it’s clearly not true ๐Ÿ˜‚ But more than happy if you want to use that rather than HR. I’ve tweaked next week. If you can make efforts, even better, and that would allow us to leave out the Friday run. But a good opportunity to bank some decent pts this week. Well done Jane
