Didn’t feel good from the start. Almost called my partner Adam to pick me up at mile 7. No idea how I managed to complete it. Forgot we had to run on pebbles, rolled my ankle 4 times, so was forced to walk that bit (hyper mobile ankles. I was wearing my insoles). I’m so slow and I don’t feel like I’m improving despite the high level of training. Very disheartening.
On a positive note, I’m not injured!
Tough race. But that’s ok. What I would say and hopefully this changes your mindset slightly about how the run went and your progress is that I had a really hard run. Much tougher than expected. So why did we both struggle here? I think it’s a simply answer. Lack of mileage in our legs. So is that is a planning issue then? No. Because we have deliberately been doing low mileage, more cross training to reduce that risk of injury. 2 weeks ago at Romney Marsh I felt great in the 10k and ran a really good race. So that got me thinking about P2P more and why that went badly. It comes down to that lack of mileage. So I think the conclusion is, for now, we just want to pick our races a bit more carefully. I intended to focus more on 5-10k races until I can get those extra miles in my legs, but to get there I know I need to be even stronger than I am right now. Then when I reach that point I can turn my focus a bit more to half marathons. But like you, I’m just grateful to be running injury free at the moment. And when you think about it, running all the way from Eastbourne to Hastings is still a hell of an achievement regardless of the pace. So try not to be too down on this one. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the feedback.
