A recovery week. Yippee. Some good sessions though. I did the 16 x 400 Threshold for the first time last week. It was hot and so I did have to drop my pace by rep 10 as my HR hit LT2. But I loved it, the short recoveries are brutal but it means the HR was only dropping from 165 – 160, so from a training point of view it’s perfect. I managed to cover 6.4km at just a fraction slower than my current 5k pace whilst my HR never left Zone 5. So high volume, high pace, medium intensity. It’s clever. If you wanted to switch the tempo run to Saturday and do that as part of parkrun that could be a good idea. Any issues shout. Keep smashing it James.

A really good home workout for the core and legs. If new to this, don’t worry about hitting the seconds or reps. Do what you can and slowly build up to the targets.

For example you might find you can only hold a plank for 20 seconds at first, which is fine. Don’t push too hard that you get injured. You’ll soon get strong and be able to add more seconds.

Strength workout completed, felt string considering yesterdays run. Stretches also completed.
Brilliant work James. Keep it up. Glad you are feeling strong.

Nice and easy. Smile, relax and enjoy. Love life!

Was an afternoon run so went for the easy one as was quite warm.

Felt good & heart rate a little lower than has been recently. Good leg stretch.
Good to see when the HR drops. I’m finding I can push the pace more and more in Z2 now my fitness is improving, so it’s nice to see those small gains.

Coach Simon🍊 “Make a note of RPM & the resistance level so you can increase them as you do more sessions.” Recoveries in between intervals are the same as the effort. So 30 and 60 seconds easy pace.

Very good spin session today. good mix of climbs & high cadence. Hard work in the warm & legs felt strong. Average power of 214w over 45 mins.
Strength workout felt good, enjoying the upper body work
Fantastic work. If you want to make gains in the upper body area. Who doesn’t. Then repeated those exercises (arms specifically) one more time in the week will make all the difference. It won’t help you running at all, but will make you feel stronger and good about yourself. Twice a week seems to be the min needed to make gains. It’s not something we necessarily need to put in the plan, but just a personal addition if that’s something you want to work on.

A threshold session in disguise. So whilst your pace will be Zone 6: 5k, because the reps are so short, you should find your heart rate stays in Zone 5, and below your LT2 (if you have that data). You can choose to run this session specifically to HR if you prefer. If you start to struggle, increase recovery slightly.

Absolutley brutal session, possibly the hardest intervals I’ve done. Felt tough in the heat after interval number 4. Also watch had an issue at half way & had to manually lap the intervals & rest, which is why interval 9 is a bit off, ran it but includes extra rest as didn’t notice at first.

Glad I finished the session as there were times where it felt like I wouldn’t, pretty much couldn’t get much recovery during the 30 seconds. Heart rate stayed high during the 30 seconds. Also probably over did the first 3/4 intervals as underestimated how tough it would be. Had to walk for a bit before starting my cool down.

Firstly, congrats for getting this done. It is tough with the short recoveries. It’s intended as a threshold so perhaps we just went over that LT2. Although likely that was only from rep 11 onwards. What we are ultimately looking to achieve is get just under LT2 and stay there for as long as possible, hence the short recoveries, so our HR stays right where we want it. I would imagine looking at your max HR that your Garmin threshold Zone (4) is max at 170ish. Thus predicted your LT2 at 170. Sorry if this is all quite a lot of detail but if we go down this route, which I think can be beneficial, it’s worth getting this right now. When I did this session I set it up on my Garmin so the second I went into Z5, it alerted me, so I was able to then slow down. Looks like your last 6 reps, were probably all in Zone 5 or certainly top end of Zone 4 (referencing Garmin zones here not PB Runner zones, again sorry for the confusion). So in summary, yes probably working a bit too hard and why it felt so tough. Would be interested in more feedback via a message in terms of which direction you would prefer to go. More threshold work? (if executed right hopefully they won’t feel this tough). Or stick with more traditional workouts? (5K pace). All that said, great effort here and probably the session which will have had most positive impact on your fitness for a while.
